Genealogy tip for today: Check for Accuracy

I have one major brick wall I have been working on for years. I have been attacking it from various points. Every time I get a chance I try to come at it from a different perspective.

“My” Caleb has 4 siblings. He has two brothers, Alanson and Almond who each have “twins” of the same names. Even their birth years with their twins are similar. So I always have to watch which one I've found.

The other day I was working on Alanson and found three censuses. I have found Alanson in Pa. which I know is ‘mine.’ But before that time, I have not been able to pin him down. So when I found these three in NY I thought maybe I had found him.

I put them in my shoe box, as I wanted to keep track of them, but not tie them to my family till I was sure. In looking at the tally marks for the 1840 census, I realized that it didn't fit the children I knew were right. So, sadly I had to ‘throw them away.’

When doing genealogy it is easy to get facts mixed up especially when names are alike. Once you establish something you know is right, be sure to always compare that with new information. It is too easy to claim a document for your ancestor, only to create chaos because you have the wrong information.

Sometimes we get desperate to pin them down, but if you claim wrong information, you still have wrong information and you do a disservice to yourself and to others as well. It can lead you on a “goose chase” that leads to nowhere. Your time is wasted, as well as others who follow your research.

Check for accuracy. Compare facts with known facts. Make sure you get it right. ♥

Earliest documented use: 1400.

Today’s Recipe
Soups for Cold Winter Days

Barley-Beef Soup

(I've got a pot of this cooking at home.
We'll see how it turns out.)


Makes: 8 servings Yield: 11 cups
Prep 25 mins. Cook 1 hr 45 mins.

Ingredients       

12 ounces beef or lamb stew meat, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 tablespoon cooking oil
4 ounces cans beef broth
1 cup chopped onion (1 large)
1/2 cup chopped celery (1 stalk)
1 teaspoon dried oregano or basil, crushed
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 bay leaf
1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
1 14 1 /2 ounce can dice tomatoes, undrained
1 cup 1/2-inch slices peeled parsnip, or 1/2-inch cubes peeled potato
2/3 cup quick-cooking barley

Directions
1. In a Dutch oven brown meat in hot oil. Stir in broth, onion, celery, oregano, pepper, garlic, and bay leaf. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 1 1/2 hours for beef (45 minutes for lamb).
2. Stir in frozen vegetables, undrained tomatoes, parsnip, and barley. Return to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, about 15 minutes more or until meat and vegetables are tender. Discard bay leaf.
3. Makes 8 servings (11 cups)
From the Test Kitchen Slow-cooker directions:
Substitute regular barley for quick-cooking barley. In a large skillet brown cubed beef in hot oil. Drain off fat. In a 5- or 6-quart slow cooker combine beef and remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 8 to 10 hours or on high-heat setting for 4 to 5 hours.
